Artist Statement by Carlos Canul

About The Artist

Carlos Canul is an active participant and award-winning visual artist in Houston. His paintings and drawings have been showcased in local, regional, and international art exhibitions. Canul has been awarded a number of public art commissions in the North Texas area. He teaches at Houston Baptist University.

Rachel Gardner

About The Artist

Rachel Gardner is a Houston-based mixed-media artist that specializes in sculpture and painting. She is best known for her life-size wolf sculptures. Her work has been shown in both museums and galleries, nationally and internationally. Locations of her shows and installations include Houston, Dallas, San Angelo, New York City, Germany, and Greece. She received her BFA from Stephen F. Austin State University and her MFA from Houston Baptist University. Gardner has devoted her art to the exploration of both the connection and disconnection to nature in our modern world. Though her primary medium is papier-mâché, she often combines her soft sculptures with found objects from nature. Her work is included in both public and private collections. She is an assistant professor of sculpture at Houston Baptist University.

About The Collaborators:

Chris Becker

Chris Becker has composed music for dance, film, and mixed-media installations and received grants and awards from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Meet The Composer, New Music USA, and the American Society of Composers and Publishers. His recent projects include scoring the two-act ballet, The Lost Princess of Oz, commissioned by Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater with support from New Music USA. The ballet ran for eight performances last summer at The Pollak Theater at Monmouth University. Rouyn Noranda, a video Becker scored for performance artist and director Jil Guyon, will screen at New York City’s Performance Mix

Patrick Moore

Cellist Patrick Moore is a musician of diverse interests who has performed as a chamber musician, soloist, orchestral musician, and improviser throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. He is also a dedicated cello teacher and teaches at the University of St.Thomas and Houston’s American Festival of the Arts. Patrick is a founding member of the Axiom Quartet which teaches at The University of St.Thomas and is also the outreach ambassador for Chamber Music Houston. The quartet signed with the record label PARMA Recordings and toured their album “Axioms-Moments of Truth” across China in the summer of 2018. In addition, they also participate in Harmony in the Air where they perform 50 concerts every year at Bush Intercontinental Airport. As an orchestral musician, he performs with Opera in the Heights and Houston’s Latin Philharmonic as their Assistant Principal cellist. An avid new music player, he enjoys playing with Aperio New Music Ensemble, Musiqa New Music Ensemble, and Foundation for Modern Music. He also performs as an improviser with Jacqui Sutton’s Frontier Jazz Orchestra. Patrick has also performed solo cello works with several ballet companies in Houston including Frame Dance Company, Uptown Dance Company, and the Creative Minds Collaborative. Creative Minds Collaborative recently engaged Patrick as a soloist in a tour of Japan to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the city of Chiba and Houston as sister cities. Patrick, along with Creston Herron, recently started a new youth orchestra to serve Houston’s northern Suburbs, The Opus 99 Youth Orchestra. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University and a Master’s degree from Rice University. His principal teachers were Lynn Harrell, Jeffrey Noel Lastrapes, Alex Ezerman, and Barbara Haffner. He has participated in masterclasses with Brinton Smith, Carter Enyeart, Nathaniel Rosen, Norman Fischer, Timothy Eddy, Katinka Klein, and Christopher French.
